Art up!

So we're back with the update on the art business. I've not done too bad, considering that I ended up in Seattle with my son for an audition of sorts (not what they had said, so a bust, even though they want him back.). I did another HUGE one 24x36 in oil on canvas, as well as a 16x20 in one. So I'm up to 14. Way behind where I wanted to be, but in terms of size, not shabby at all. Here are my two new ones.

The top one is the 16x20x1 in oil on canvas. The bottom is the 24x36x1 in oil on canvas. Both are done from my own photos. The colors of the bottom one are actually a bit darker than my camera is taking. It's annoying the heck out of me.

Sheri is on a roll! her cards (which I believe are 2.5x3.5 ATC/ACEO size) are too freaking cute. She's also mentioned that she's inspired to take an official art class next semester...she hasn't had any?! I love her style.

This girl is rocking it! I'm going to have to do a bunch of small ones to actually make 30, but either way, I'm happy I gave this a go. I've completed more paintings this past month, than the prior year. Thanks for following us!

Today's photos, I dedicate to those who lost their lives in the Canadian Parliament shooting. It's hard to remember there is such beauty when ugliness is so in your face. But if you find the beauty, you will find the profound meaning of life.

Art Post with Sheri Velarde and myself - Progress

So, I looked at my month for October and saw it was full of editing, and some writing. But I had to find a way to make sure I didn't drop my art as has happened so many times in the past. I lose some skill when I go weeks or months without even drawing. I decided to do 30 paintings in 30 days. I have a cheerleader, another artist who is thinking of tagging along, and another artist who is doing one larger one a week, and one other writer/artist who is doing this with me. I have through day for done by day three...and then the inevitable, I have five million hours of work to get done in 72 happened. But, you know what? Since I'm doing this, I'm now heading to my art cave instead of playing on FB all day. Though I am sure I could use the break, painting is a break! Besides, because of the challenge, I got two small pieces commissioned. I happened to have two small canvases I bought with me when we went to get coffee.

In the meantime, Sundays she will be blogging here (and she's much better at the schedule than I!). She even blogged yesterday when it was my day LOL

Here are her pics (She's up to day 13!):

I am still on day five, though that will change by end of day.

Sheri has an etsy shop where some of this has already started to appear. She also has a FB artist page for you to watch her doings. She does more than paint!

I have an etsy shop and FB artist page as well! :D I'm looking forward to doing a ton of paintings and sketches this week.

I hope you join us Sunday and Wednesday to see our successes, and yes, our failures. We are working to become better artists, but along the way, you always have a flop or two...or ten :S LOL But you also have many successes! I also hope that you are inspired to be creative in your own way with us!

Have a good one!

Thanks for a thanks :)

http://vampwritergrrl.blogspot.com/2012/01/lbushman-studios-on-etsy.html

This linke will send you to Robin's blog. She's encouraging everyone to buy home crafted items, to support families like mine, and thanking me for the items she has received.

This woman has, even through her own personal turmoil, helped me when I most needed it. We lost a lot of money when my daughter was in the hospital. My husband didn't lose his job, but he was only 6 months in and had already used most of his sick/personal days up. He had to take the one extra day he had of personal time before FMLA kicked in, so he did get a bit, but other than that, he didn't. Between the extra gas, money for me in the hospital, his time off work, and a medical garnishment that started that month, we were down about 3/4-1month's pay. That may not seem like a lot, but to us...it hurt. So I started trying to sell my paintings. My friend told me about etsy, how to go about everything, was my first customer and told me so dos and don'ts.

I didn't make much, but I did get enough to get gas money for my husband to get to work before the next payday. What I gained though, was confidence. Confidence to put my stuff out there. I still haven't made as much as we lost at that point, or enough to pay for any of my other medical bills, but I have had that little bit come in when I needed it most. Almost *all* of my money I earned has gone to gas and groceries. Very little back into my art. I need to do that now and my next sell, I'm buying yellow and green paint LOL She's also been encouraging in my writing and a fellow groaner as we cut/edit/look for just the right word, and dream!

Between her and my MIL, I can believe in myself even when I don't.

Thank you!!

Bad News Good News

So this is kind of a good news bad news kind of post. Bad news, I've been laid off, good news more time for writing. Bad new, I've had stress related pain that presented like heart attack and spiked my blood pressure to 182/96. Good news, I've been laid off stressful job.

Bad news, I got edits back from beta and verbal slap about other books out. Good news he still wants to read it again when finished. Bad news, I pulled most of my books out of the selling market. Good news, they'll be back :) minor fixes, formatting, etc. But I'll wait until after the holiday. Bad news, I quite writing everyday during Nano cuz of stuff that came up. Good news, I did so much writing early on still finished with over 52k :)

Bad news, I haven't painted in two weeks. Good news, finished the last painting commission and it's at it's new home. Bad news, 10yo severe sass negative sarcasm session at parent (me) last night. Good news, I get extra chores done for next two weeks :)

Now that I've been laid off officially and am abel to go back to focusing on my writing and other arts, I'll be posting more again (I hope) as I won't have to choose between writing and blog time. And I'll hopefully be able to look at my writing with fresh eyes.

How've you all been while I've been roller coasting around with work, art, and writing??

Happy Day

Happy Day! I'm having a day off of the day job! not even working from home :D yeah! so today is cleaning, painting, writing, editing day. And planning for NaNoWriMo. Yep, it's that time of year again!

I'll be pushing my post from last year regarding Nano and ways to prepare. This year, with no fudge room cuz of my day job, I'm going to have to really do as I say! No slacking for this girl. I've got a couple of ideas now. One is a sequel, but problem is, I've lost my mojo for that one. Part of it's the romance. See what happened, when I planned the series, one of the characters were supposed to fall in love with x, then y came along and screwed everything up! I haven't adjusted for it yet.

Then there's this sci-fi sequel I need to do for Piza Seven, then there's these 2 other sci-fi books I've started/written down based on dreams of mine (that's how Rebellion on Piza 7 started! Which, incidently, you can get here at Barnes and Noble in hardback.)

Then there's this other story creeping around in my mind, in the dark, the cold, that wants to see the light. Even though all those other stories are more thought out with definitive boundries and goals in mind, I know me. I'll be willing to bet it's this creepy one running through my head that gets written. I've never written a full length true horror before. I've written horrific elements, mostly ones that I delete out of my books, but, not a horror story. Although, I did write a short that's available on my website. I started a full length novel, lost it, and now this other one is brushing at my consciousness. Maybe it'll take form, maybe it won't. But needless to say, I have plenty of ideas going into NaNoWriMo!

and in other news, we were able to go to the fair. I think it's the first fun tangible thing we've been able to do as a direct result of the extra income I've brought in. We got away with 10 hours of fun and food for five people for under 200! With the prices of the fair food, I find this nothing short of amazing. :P

I missed the demotion derby because my 2yo was cranky. So I put him back in the stroller and left. We went to the building with all the quilts and crossstitch and crochet and he fell asleep. I then went to the ag building which is where they have the art and photos. Next year, I'm getting my arse of the ground and getting my pics in. Biggest problem is the artwork has to be framed. In the amateur category I fall in, I have a really good chance of winning AND it gives us free tickets into the fair. So over the next year I'm going to take advantage of any huge framing sales if the stuff at work pans out.

In the meantime, I have to get back to my painting, writing, cleaning :D

Explain

Some of you who follow me on twitter may have noticed that I've put out more buy from me type tweets. Well, that's because I now have two jobs (besides being a mother and wife, I mean) of being a writer and an artist. I'm not making a lot of money on my art, but the 10-20 dollars for my ACEOs and other small products have sure come in handy. So, it's a job. And besides the job, I have this dream of being a writer. A paid writer :) So, that's what I'm doing. I'm putting out a bunch of my books that I've been writing over the last few years (mostly the ones written/finished in the last year) some shorts and some full length and choosing the ones I want to go to agents/publishers. The "special" ones that I think will hit the mass market in a favorable way. Most of my other writing is niche writing, and those I will do ebook versions of so people within that niche can buy.

As for my art, I'm trying to get commissions and sale my artwork. I can't afford to go to work. That may sound funny but lets look at the costs...

1) I homeschool. Some might say, well you can put your kids back in school. I could, but let's look at the stats. Why did I start homeschool in the first place? My son was having asthma attacks 3-5 days a week, with his brother following a close second. He was also throwing up 3-5 days a week because he was so stressed out about school. He was 9 yo old at the time. If I'm working, I'd have to call in to work in order to stay home and give my son his treatments except on days my husband has off. How long would I keep my job?

2) I have a 2yo. So would need daycare. As most daycares won't take a kid and let you pay for only 3 days a week, I'd have to pay for five days a week. For children with no special needs daycare is 500+ a month. For special needs children, which my son is since he has Down Syndrome, that starts at 700+ a month.

3) We only have one vehicle. Add in the extra cost to gas for the extra trips and money given to others if they pick us up (we live five miles from nowhere. Seriously.) wear and tear on tires, etc.

4) extra clothes. The jobs I'm most qualified for and MIGHT pay me enough to cover the costs of 2&3 would require a whole new wardrobe as I have no clothes that would work. And once I have a wardrobe, there's the upkeep, nylons, shoes, dry cleaning, etc.

5) And my Down Syndrom son, who is high functioning, largely due to the fact that his family treats him as we would any other family member, would lose out. My homeschooling has helped him more than expected.

Even going to school, I've had to take these things into account. I have night class, with only one day class (one hour) and can get help for that hour. I'll be home for kids and still able to get husband from work. And my paint stained jeans are just fine for classes. But I had to choose my classes with all the aforementioned problems in mind. W/o financial aid to help with the gas, I couldn't do it. So, please forgive me if it seems like I'm spamming your timeline...I'm tyring not to! :D But also keep me in mind when looking to purchase artsy products!

PS blogger being a booger again to me. I cannot get it to work whenever I want it to!

Lots of stories

Funny, when I released my smut (I just love that word! Oh, and this one, smexy!) I figured on no sales for a week or so, especially since my CP and biggest fan was on an airplane the day I released it, but I've had a few sales already :D And, more peeps have shown an interest! I'm so excited! It's available through Amazon now, and yes, I did do the cover :) This is all good practice for the release of my romantic thriller next month, which I'm hoping to have good sales on! I love to write :D

I write in all different genres. I have so much writing I've done, and now that I've taken the plunge into self-pubbing, I have lots I'm going to put up for sale. With the shorts, the I'll probably have something new every month to six weeks, and I'm putting up free stuff on my website. And as you heard on prior blogs, I'm going to school, yada yada, so BUSY, BUSY! but fun busy :D

Also, looks like I might have small commission next month :D makes me double happy cuz I get to utilize an idea I've had floating in my head for a bit now :D She can pay the half down next month which I'll use to buy the particular canvases with. I'm so excited!

Don't forget about my art auction! Please...thanks! My email is posted on the blog site, but just in case, here's the one I check the most: leona.bushman@gmail.com

Have a great day and buy my books! and my friends' books :D

Art Auction

Okay, someone suggested something awhile ago, and I have no idea the proper way to go about it, but I'm going to try anyway. I'm going to auction off some of my artwork..There will be minimums, yada yada. I need to raise some money. We've promised the boys Harry Potter and now need to deliver :)

Here's the deal:

Three paintings, all with minimum amounts. One week to post amount you're willing to pay. This will be open auction in comments as well as silent through email due to blogger's BS re: comments. I will post the latest auction amount either in comments, blogger willing, or will edit the post to announce. Also, they all have a buy now price on Etsy, which is where I'll be linking for the pics. Please do not pay until auction is over, unless you go through Etsy and take the buy now price.

Auction item number one: Lily of the Green The pics are a littly fuzzy and I'm going to try to take better ones today, but you get the idea. FYI this piece was done with pallete knife. Starting price is $200 payable by paypal.

Item number two: Purple Vase This piece is custome framed. Also done with pallette knife. Minimum on this is $300 payable by paypal (due to the frame) and there is little to no medium used in the paints when I do it by pallete knife. Buy now price is $750 through Etsy.

Item number three: Free to Roam This is large painting, done with thick paints in some places and not others. This is a favorite of mine (as you'll see when you read the description.;) Starting price is $400 payable by paypal. The Buy Now price is $1250

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT PAY UNTIL NOTIFIED YOU'VE WON OR BUYING DIRECT THROUGH ETSY! Paypal charges me a percentage of all incoming funds and you will only get back what Paypal actually delivers to me.

This is a non-refundable auction. All proceeds go to benefit my family. I made a comment about Harry Potter, but really, we need so much more or I wouldn't be doing this. Thanks for your support!

This auction goes from now until 3:00 until Tuesday, July 26th, PST. or whatever I'm at in WA state LOL Bids after that time will not be accepted. You may make an offer on any of my artwork available on Etsy as well. The items on this list are gauranteed to go at the minimum prices, the others are not, but I'm willing to negotiate it.

Here Come Summer

MY muse and my mojo are back, but I'm stunting my way through the word count. It's there, but just under 1k the days I write. Sundays have turned into semi forced days off...but that's okay. AS I've said previously, you have to take time off or your body will do it for you.

I started to do a new blog Sat, Sun, Mon and it didn't happen for a variety of reasons. So this morning I woke up and said I'm going to Borders to get some time in. I'm drinking a Mint Chocolate Javakula and eating a browning. *pauses while jealousy infuses your mind*

My house is superbly rearranged and we may have solved an issue with our woodstove. Now just need to figure out where to keep it for the summer. I love the way the house is arranged with it out of the house though. We'll see what happens there. I'm feeling pretty optimistic about the future, which has been a rare commodity of late. I had a commission for artwork, bookmarks sold, and someone else who's thinking of commissioning artwork. I have writing that's wanted, a check, albeit a small one, coming sometime in the future for a short in an anthology, and another small one coming in the fall for another contribution to an anthology. Small things but it all helps me to feel good about myself.

I'm about at 22k on the sort that used to be 12,600 so I'm getting somewhere with my little bits, but want to go faster. Tomorrow, if it's not windy, I'm going to be burning and weeding, but as of Thursday, I think I need to have another NANO :D With the way the house is gettting organized, it might even be possible. Just the thought of doing that makes me feel good :D

So I think I'll call up my partner and start up another writing thing for the two of us since the last one was short circuited by life. My kids have been given their instructions for summer school. Because of my daughters stuff, we got a little behind (not too far as I'm not afraid to make them work later or on weekends when emergencies happen) so I've given them their insturctions for what they have to get done if they want a month off for the summer. Yep, I'm mean. Only giving them a month off... partly because of the family upset that happened. Plus, their are more ways of teaching than sitting in a classroom and they're more fun in the summer :D

I'm working with the boys on art but my older one wants something different, so Nate's teaching him beading techniques (which I know enough of to backhim up) and I'm going to work with both of them on design and compostition. Shhhhh....they don't know that's part of the schooling :D I told them we could set up a lemonade stand at the end of our drive and they can sell their art stuff as well. Course this is happening on their month "off" lol I know, devious I am, but it's a lot easier to get their cooperation and a lot more fun for them if they don't know it's happening as part of school.

Also, I'm going to be starting a medeival section for the boys. Think it'll roll right into the next school year. We can do everything from music (which I need to bone up on) to sewing, history, geography, politics, and for breaks? Math by way of monolpoly...

Anyway, my summer looks to be full and exciting. With the school stuff, writing and hopefully camping/day trips to mountains, I plan on giving my boys a fun summer, even if they learn something along the way. Hope you all have summer plans that work for you.

BTW, I plan on blogging all through the summer as well. So if you need some company because it seems everyone and their brother is off on wonderful momnth long summer trips, come see me and we can have our own fun together :D

Writing and Burn OUT

I've said this to quite a number of people, but I've had it shoved into my face that I need to practice what I preach...namely take breaks.

I've been working so hard on doing the edits that I burned out. Kaputz. I've warned my CP partner, other twitter friends, anyone who says they're having a hard time. I say to these wonderful people, maybe you need a REAL break.

What do I mean by that? I don't mean a break networking, or socializing for your book or writing your blog, or doing housework (unless that unlikely chore will help bring your stress level down), or doing your taxes. I mean a BREAK.

do something that you enjoy. Talk to friends on twitter cuz you can. Play hearts online. Go see a family member. Do a hobby. Go Exercise. I'm not the only writer who knows you need to exercise, but I think we forget! Something I was doing and fell out of the habit was stopping writing every half hour to hour, depending on the flow, and getting up and cleaning. I picked up stuff the children had made a mess of, started a load of laundry, watered plants, etc. It's been harder since homeschooling since I'm already stopping every five minutes to either help them or referee or make them work.

After my daughter was hospitalized, I completely fell out of the habit. I was just too exhausted. Plus, I wasn't doing much else. I wrote, I edited, I cleaned, I played with the kids a little and I stressed. I didn't take time for me.

I opened an Etsy shop to help bring money in cuz things are so tight. This has forced me to do a little bit of artistic things, but not a lot. Photoshopping some of my photos has helped, then I started making bookmarks. I had to design them. Find the paper, find stickers/punches, make tassels, decide on beads all kinds of things. I even have done a little drawing on a couple. All of the sudden I remembered.

"Oh yeah, take a break, stupid!" I'm creative in a lot of ways. I paint, I draw (not my strong suite!), I scrapbook, I sew, I crochet, I crossstitch. Now you will notice something there--a lot of I's. They were left there on purpose. Remember to take care of you--not just everyone else. I can do a lot, but I wasn't doing anything for "I" that relieved my stress.

Plus, something I've learned over the last year or so is that if I exclusively work on one artistic skill to the exclusion of all others for too long, I will lose it. Temporarily to be sure. But my mind will shut down.

For instance: I've done a LOT of plays. I've been in them, helped build sets, and I've made so many costumes that I get woozy thinking about it. When it gets time for dress rehearsal, I'm usually trying to frantically finish them up since I usually don't have enough time from purchasing of material until day it starts. Anyway, if I spend weeks only sewing in between doing quickie no brainer meals, and do little to no writing, I will start making mistakes in my sewing, get headaches and be unable to do easy problem solve things. I apparently need to do the variety of projects to feed all parts of my brain!

Another instance: Recently, between daughter's illness, homeschooling, children's regression issues, potty training and being unable to find my meds, writing has been a grab and go. I've been printing and laminating for etsy but not doing a whole lot on the creative end until recently. All of the writing I've been doing plus the following edits, I've not left time to do any other projects. And my brain shut down.

So, I'm fixing that. I'm getting my exercise cleaning house and doing yard work. Taking my damned meds (I take thyroid meds. I had both thyroids removed from cancer so have to have them to function. Believe me when I say not finding my meds even for a day can be a major focusing issue!) and making time to do other things.

I made more bookmarks, crocheted a couple of washcloths, have more to make, and I'm going to work on more writing skills. All of these things so I can continue to write and do the work.

Writing is a job. Like any job, you need to take breaks from it. 15 min. Eat. Stretch, do more than one aspect, like the social networking, blogging, as well as the editing and writing. And most importantly. Don't forget to take whole days off. Days where your mind and body can rest.

Now don't let those days turn into weeks (unless it's a planned vacation LOL) and don't be lazy. Do your goals and what you want. You want to write five days a week, then do it. It's your goals and your dreams, just be sure that you take care of yourself. You'll be surprised at how rejuvenating even getting out to pull some weeds and plant some tomatoes can be. :D

Yo Yo

So much of life is ups and downs for me right now. I've almost forgotten what it feels like to be on cruise control :D

Writing has been on back burner for two days. I had a really bad headache yesterday. After five minutes on the computer, I'd feel sick, so I did a bit of hit and run on twitter yesterday and concentrated on my art side of things. Printing out pics when I could stand the computer, and cutting, taping and laminating the stuff together when I couldn't. I did get a few things done...until I ran out of tape. What happened when I ran out of double sided tape?

Well, I had to stop and did some clean up. I love how my art and writing work together for me. Being out of tape is like being out of words. I might have these wonderful characters and ideas, but if the words are lost, they're going to sit there in a jumble until I can organize them and tape them all together to form a cohesive thought.

Sometimes, having that day off can rejuvinate my writing. And it will. I'm feeling it now. I'm going to write the first installment of the serial for splintered lands so we can get that up and running. I'm also going to watch some Doctor Who or Supernatural depending on what mood I'm in when I sit down to do some paper edits.

Then I'm going to REWRITE the MS I just finished. I learned something new about frist person and the difference between it and first person present tense (didn't know there was a difference. UGH) So, wish me luck in my endeavors. One day I will pay it forward as it has been for me.

As writers, we all pay it forward. There is so much free advice out there--some of it's even good :P --and we all give freely. We want each other to succeed, even as we want success for ourselves. Of course, like any group of people there are bad seeds out there; you just hope you don't fall under the shade of anything that grows from that seed and that you stay under the boughs that grew from the seeds of knowledge of the rest who want your success!

I wish you and yours peace and prosperity as we move forward. Especially to my friend who's grandpa has cancer. Love Ya little sis of my heart...

Days 21-25

If you 're my nano buddy, You will notice very little word count change. I have discovered that I do not write well when I am very cold. A little cold is invigorating! But we got extremely cold here.

I'm not sure why it's so bad. My MIL lived here before us. Everytime we visited, it was WAY too hot. I finally picked up two space heaters--one for each bathroom. I'm warming up. Our pipes froze to the laundry room and one bathroom. Today, in middle of Thanksgiving turkey dinner cooking and giving boys baths (it was finally warm enough!), the water quit working. Just like that. I went to wash off eggs I had peeled, and in the time it took to peel 2 eggs, BAMN the water was gone.

My husband managed to reroute the water. We have water back in kitchen, 1 bathroom (thank god!) and the laundry. Will have to have pumpkin pie tomorrow since the water going off put me behind. I'm thankful we didn't take our friends up on the offer to go to their house. It would have been dark when we got home and NO WATER> Instead, it was a minor inconvenience that will repeat tomorrow, but hopefully be over then.

Word wise, I've gotten about 100 or so. I was going to write a lot yesterday, and I tried. I was able to work a couple of things out in my mind, but I was too cold to do more than a little bit. Warmer today, so maybe tonight will get a chance to write. I've already warned everyone, that I am doing very little over next three days but write. Maybe five days.

My husband had to stay home yesterday to try and deal with the frozen pipes and his car didn't start in morning. Result? He lost 12 hours of work, and the paid holiday. If you don't work the day before and the day after, you don't get the holiday pay.

Result of that? total loss of 28 hours of paid time. Result of that? I don't get to go to Ocean and paint. My MIL was going to take me to ocean next weekend (after Nano ended) so I could spend 5 days painting. Instead, sigh. Oh well. Maybe another time.

I'm really bummed about it. :((((((

Okay, pity party over. At least until day I was supposed to leave. So, I managed to make two more hats for baby (two I already made are somewhere...) one for busband, and one for my other two boys, scarf for husband, hats and scarfs for friend's kid's birthday. Need to make hats and scarfs for nieces for Christmas, and re-make me some. I don't know if I have enough yarn because the mice took over myart room. I'm taking it back, but I lost more yarn :(

In some ways, a very trying week. However, it should help me to go fresh at the writing tomorrow while it was swirling in my mind these last fiew days. I will make the 50k. I will be struggling to make the 70k. It's possible. I've written that much in a week before. Let's hope life cooperates!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

It's almost here

I'm excited for NaNoWriMo. I'm also excited because some artwork/writing was accepted into an ezine http://forevernocturne.wordpress.com for the October issue slated to releases any day now :) Now, if I can only get my goodies made for next month, I'd be all set.

How about you? Anyone doing NaNo? Who's ready? (Except the writing part. I keep changing my mind about what I'm going to write. I've gone back to the paranormal again, but we shall see.)

Winds of Fire work

I love Winds of Fire. Keep that in mind when reading this post.

UGGGGGHHHHH LOL I have it on authonomy under Harper Collins. Response has been good, with comments about punctuation and a few cliches that I've already fixed (I think). I'm not good at finding the punctuation and stuff cuz I already know what I mean. Well, I asked my husband for help. All I have to say, is I'm very glad he isn't using a red pen this time!! My poor paper would be bleeding to death. He took an English comp class last semester and now is picking my work apart!! :) I'm glad. The story rocks, so I want nothing to detract from it.

In the meantime... WAAAAAAAAA

But I'm getting some serious work done on it and getting back into my flow. Good luck to the rest of you :)

I also think I found my photo albums, which have been missing. There is still a lot to find, but we're getting there.

I've decided to make quilts for my families Bdays this year and I'm almost finished with Patricks. Edward's Bday already passed, so I'll have to think of something for him :) Nate's is coming up quick. It's at the end of the month. Will have to find soething relatively easy, yet spectacular to put together with the fabric I have on hand.

The baby got his already. Soft flannel fabric. mmmmm. It's a project I finished that was started like 13 years ago! LOL I finally had all the stuff in the same place! Last year, before moving to TX, I finished a lot of old projects. It was my New Year's Goal. It's my goal again this year, but with an addition. It will include my WIPS not just my arts. I'll have to make a list and break things down into smaller pieces. Patrick's quilt is one that I started a long time ago, so that's doing double duty. Will have to work out the rest.

Have a good day :D

PIns & Needles

I'm a writer, but I'm also an artist/crafter. I do many things, and yes, when I choose to, I do them well. Until recently, I thought that was normal. I mean, doesn't everyone decide they want to tat, go pick up the tools and learn to tat while eating their lunch at Taco Bell? That's pretty much what I did, although I lost the tool right away (it's so danged small!)and will now have to relearn as I didn't practice :(

I crochet, I hate knitting, but I'm capable of it. I had been taught the basics 20 yrs ago and never picked it up again until my recent appearance in Antigone. I was the queen. Now, if you haven't read the play, you might think that's exciting right? Well, it's not. The queen only shows up in the beginning, with no lines (a first for me LOL) and knits. So I got the little pack that teaches knitting and learned to knit, and I had to do it without my glasses as well.

Results? I'll probably try to keep up the skill for making socks, but that's about it. I still prefer crochet! Although, I did find that the continental version wasn't as frustrating for me so that's the route I'll keep I think.

I can make friendly plastic jewelry. It's not so popular anymore, but it was a lot of fun. It's a rubbery plastic that changes color a bit as it is heated and maneuvered. you learn how to cut the pieces the right size, etc. It's one of those skills that is getting lost in today's society.

I can cross stitch, although it is time consuming and exacting. I have made two heirloom Christmas stockings to date. Let me tell you, they are intricate and beautiful. Most people who meet me don't think I have the patience nor the skill to do something like that, but I do. It's the time that kills me :P

I like to quilt, although there are parts of it I still need to learn for doing the top stitching. I need a better machine for it, is the first problem. Anyway, I definitely don't get enough time for this with my young kids. I have to focus when piecing or I cut all the wrong sizes/shapes and I am too poor to be running about spending money on more fabric simply because I mess up.

And speaking of Fabric, (really the capitalized "fabric" is how I think of fabric) I sew costumes. I am involved in so many plays through community theatre that I have taught myself how to make costumes. I have had pointers from friends along the way, but mostly it has been trial and error for me.

Like Fabric, I'm also into paper. I taught myself to scrapbook, with friends of course, so I could do my wedding album. My wedding album came out beautifully and I have a whole array of paper and tools to play with. I combined it with my stamping (as many people have) and have enjoyed myself immensely.

Then, if I haven't missed any, there is my art. I came into it late in the game and I have found the thing that makes me happiest. Painting, oil paints in particular, help to soothe my mind and release my stress. I've changed my major from political science to art because of a chance 2 credit oil pastel class I happened to take. (They only offered it 1 or 2 quarters at the community college). It's impacted my life unbelievably. I can paint in almost any style I choose to. I am best at impressionism but I tend to throw in how I feel about my subject which gives it an expressionist edge.

This lead to confidence. Confidence that I can finish hard things and learn more. Which lead to me being comfortable picking up my writing again when I lost my job. I feel the need to create in all the ways set forth here. When a particular 'mood' strikes me it is best if I follow that lead. If I try to force something else out, I usually end up with something ugh. If I don't listen to my mood or can't because of life, then I get frustrated and my stress level increases ten fold.

I've decided to make writing a career, which means I have to do it almost everyday. I have to keep learning and growing. It's more than a whim or a mood. There are days when I wish I could do all of the things I love. However, for me, if I could write and paint everyday I would get my creative edge appeased as well as the right brain satisfied.

There is so much that goes into writing that isn't about the creative process. More so than most people think. The same is true for all of the arts I listed. Most of the ones listed takes math, precision, planning and goals. You may be an artist and very good at any of the hundreds of crafts available to you, but remember, there is more to the craft, and therefore more to you, than creative moodiness :D

PS I can't wait to get back to Washington and have all my stuff back! The only thing I brought were my paints. I had shelves and shelves of paper crafting stuff and yarn and it had to be put in storage :( Happy days for me when I get back. It will be like the best Christmas ever when I get to see my things again!!
